SOME ATTRACTIONS IN SYRACUSE

Ear of Dionysus

is an artificial cave located in the ancient stone quarry called latomia del Paradiso, under the Greek Theater of Syracuse. Dug out of the limestone, it is about 23 m high, 5 to 11 m wide and 65 m deep [1], with an S-shaped pattern that also makes it a place for acoustic amplification of sounds.

The Greek theater of Syracuse is a theater built in its first phase in the fifth century BC, located within the Archaeological Park of Neapolis, on the slopes on the south side of the Temenite hill and rebuilt in the third century BC and again transformed in Roman times.

Church of S. Giovanni

 

For a long time this church was recognized as an ancient cathedral of Syracuse, built in Acradina, extra moenia, in the region of the Catacombs, in the place where, according to tradition, the proto-bishop of Syracuse, San Marciano, martyred under Gallienus and Valerian, was buried. .

Arenella beach

Very beautiful beach from a naturalistic point of view with a sandy area but also a large rocky area.

Arethusa source

Fonte Aretusa is a mirror of water.

Its origin is the development of one of the many outlets of the water table located in the Syracusan area, the aquifer that also feeds the Ciane river on the opposite side of the port.

Syracuse Cathedral

 

The Cathedral of the Nativity of Holy Mary incorporates what was the main sacred Doric temple of the Syrakousai polis , dedicated to Athena ( Minerva ) and converted into a church with the advent of Christianity . it has become part of the heritage protected by UNESCO

Maniace Castle

 

The Maniace castle is one of the most important monuments of the Swabian period in Syracuse and one of the best known Frederick's castles. In 1038 the commander Giorgio Maniace , promoted the restoration or construction of works to defend the port of Ortigia.

Temple of Apollo

 

The temple of Apollo (Apollónion) is one of the most important monuments of Ortigia , in front of the Pancali square in Syracuse . It is certainly the oldest Doric temple in the Greek West.
